Kartell - The Culture of Plastics
The Italian brand that has created a unique range of design icons relates its history for the
first time in the monographic book published by Taschen
The first monograph dedicated to Kartell will be available throughout the world starting from December 2012.
63 years of company history collected in a 400-page volume published by the prestigious Taschen publishing
house and documented with a rich selection of images and contributions from authoritative international
names linked to the world of design.
"Kartell - The Culture of Plastics" is a chronological excursion through the technological, aesthetic and
functional innovations and the activities of the Italian company, world leader in the industrial production of
design products made of plastics which today is in its third generation.
Telling the tale in this coffee table book divided by decades from the 50ies up to the new millennium are
Silvana Annicchiarico, Gillo Dorfles, Chantal Hamaide, Marie-Laure Jousset, R. Craig Miller, Giovanni Odoni,
Franca Sozzani and Deyan Sudjic, while journalists Giulia Crivelli and Giovanni Odoni interview the current
president, Claudio Luti, owner of the company for over 20 years and artificer of the new boom.
A design industry of global fame synonymous with the concept of "transparency" is described from its
beginnings, through its evolution, the challenges it has overcome, its incessant drive in research and
technological innovation, its designers, the prizes won (nine Industrial Design Association Compasso D'Oro
awards won as well as other international awards), its global distribution, and especially its iconic products
that can be found in homes all over the world. There are historic and archive shots, announcements and
visuals, with detailed captions on the technological innovations revealing the story of the company that
taught us to appreciate the culture of plastics.
As Claudio Luti remarks in the introduction to the volume, “Writing a book on Kartell is much more than
conceptualising a book on design: talking about Kartell means talking about a family, a city and the
pioneering idea that led to the discovery of the Culture of Plastics, thanks to a new material."
"Kartell - The Culture of Plastics" will be published in six languages in two editions: one in English, French
and German and one in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.
