#hometogether – Jonathan Richards

Jonathan Richards from Richards Stanisich chats with more space how he is making his way through isolation in the company of Gough Whitlam, Picasso, Matisse, Bacon and Freud, while enjoying the beauty of his garden and the sounds of soul music.

Where are you currently working from?

My home in Wombarra, just south of Sydney before Wollongong. It's about an hour from our Surry Hills studio.

What are you reading?

'The Art of Rivalry' by Sebastian Smee. It's about four extraordinary friendships/rivalries between art greats, for example Picasso and Matisse, Bacon and Freud.

Your most valuable possession?

My garden. I get great pleasure from working away in the garden, both the physicality of it (as a perfect counterbalance to the design studio) and the satisfaction of continually improving it.

Something about you that not many people know?

I'm an avid piano player. Any spare moment, I'll play. I currently driving my family and neighbours mad in lockdown.

"'The Eleventh' about the Whitlam dismissal in 1975. Absolutely fascinating with new insight into the extraordinary political saga."

Your playlist?

I'm loving an Apple Playlist compiled by Q-Tip from 'Tribe Called Quest' with fantastic soul music and I'm rediscovering all the great music on the ECM label. Beautiful listening for working at home.

Best piece of advice for getting through this together

See this as an opportunity to make change. Rather than waiting for things to return to normal, consider that this might be the chance to shake things up.
