#hometogether - Cathy Jameson

Gensler’s design director Cathy Jameson talks to more space about the beauty and calming force of the bush that surrounds her new workplace and the wallabies she watches from her dining room office, a growing collection of 1960s glass and furniture, and how thankful she is to have spent time over the past few weeks with her much missed cat Joshy...

Where are you working from at the moment?

At the moment I am working from the dining room. It’s one of the nicest places to be in the house so I feel a little guilty with the kids and husband relegated to the bedrooms. I look out onto the bush and can walk outside very quickly. Unfortunately I can walk to the kitchen just as quickly! I had already been working with a partially remote team in India so it has been less of a transition work wise, but I miss my daily interactions with friends and colleagues in the office.

What is your most valuable possession?

My most valuable possession is the house itself. It’s adjacent the bush, has great walls of glass to the view and we see wallabies daily along with other critters. Looking out at the bush makes me feel calm and happy, along with my ‘visual stuff’. I have been waiting for the walls of glass bricks to come back into fashion!

Take us through some of your most design coveted pieces in your home?

Like many people, I collect certain bits and pieces for no rhyme or reason. My folly is glass. I think I have over 120 pieces that are on display, some valuable, some junk – all loved. The British factory Whitefriars is my favourite at the moment and I have been slowly building my collection of 1960s soda-lime glass over the last 10 years. (the navy blue glass in my pics) I also collect/hoard retro furniture and have a Roger McLay Kone Chair in the garage ready for refurbishment.

I feel a little guilty with the kids and husband relegated to the bedrooms. I look out onto the bush and can walk outside very quickly.

Best piece of advice for getting through this together?

One of the most bittersweet parts of lockdown was spending time with my cat Joshy who passed away last week. I am thankful that in the last five weeks all his humans were around all the time and that he had a pretty exit. It has been hard on the family
