Nile: A balance of contrasts

The Foscarini Nile light design by Rodolfo Dordoni embodies the perfect balance of two opposites, the consistency of marble and the delicacy of glass, the contrast of mineral coolness and handmade warmth, industry, and craftsmanship. The arrangement of the two volumes seems to defy the law of gravity. The base and the diffuser, at different angles, remain in place thanks to an invisible game of weights, positions and joints for a unified dynamic effect.

“I wanted a sculptural presence, a real light diffuser, with a shape which wasn't necessarily functionality driven. I designed two intersecting volumes: the small marble base and the large glass diffuser. When I looked at the item, it reminded me of the famous bust of Egyptian queen Nefertiti; this is what inspired the product's name: Nile”.

— Rodolfo Dordoni, Designer

The idea began with a sketch and is the result of a strong partnership between Rodolfo Dordoni and Foscarini that has been going strong for over 30 years, but has only materialised in updates and a restyling of the company’s two best-sellers, Lumiere and Buds.
