#hometogether - Sebastian Kaintoch

Architect Sebastian Kaintoch from KA Design Studio talks to More Space about new projects he’s working on from the design-filled apartment he shares with his partner and their 2-year old daughter, and the joy of his favourite spot in the backyard, a hammock slung under a big avocado tree.

Where are you working from at the moment?

Working from home. I live at Bondi Beach in a small garden apartment which I share with my partner and our 2-year old daughter, Alma. Our studio did the refurbishment of this beautiful Art Deco building a few years ago, and we were lucky enough to move into one of the apartments with a garden. It's a quick walk from our office on Campbell Parade opposite Bondi Beach.

Take us through some of your most design coveted pieces in your home?

My partner also comes from a design background and her love for modernist furniture started early. She found a Wassily Chair in one of those long gone auction houses in Sydney about 13 years ago and since then we have looked to maintain this theme in our furniture selection. The Ray and Charles Eames DCM dining chairs and Akari floor lamps by the Japanese/American designer Isamu Noguchi, and the Le Corbusier LC14 Tabouret boxes, have a minimalist and sleek design that compliments our taste and the interior elements in our home.

If you have something from the Space collection - what do you love about it?

My favourite pieces are the Le Corbusier LC14 Tabouret boxes by Cassina. We wanted Alma to have more space to play in the living room therefore a traditional coffee table scenario just wasn’t practical for us anymore. These boxes are a serious game changer, we use them as side tables, foot rests, coffee tables and Alma can easily slide them out of the way or climb onto them. I also love our SP01 Mohana Side table which complements perfectly the Akari floor lamps and its two level design make it so functional to house not only decorative objects but our home pod as well.

Your favourite artwork?

I think the Phillip Barlow painting 'Dawn on Strand’ is our favourite. His bokeh style paintings have a beautiful sense of light and colour told through abstracted scenery. It adds a ‘pop’ to the apartment as most of our furniture and decor finishes are neutral.

Tell us something about yourself not many people know, a special interest or hobby?

We utilise our beachside office as much as possible (when there is no pandemic of course , we try to surf in our lunch breaks and spend time in the ocean. My work colleagues and I are avid surfers and skateboarders in our spare time.

Can you share any projects you are working on?

We are currently finishing a new home nestled into the rock face above Tamarama Beach with beautiful views of the ocean, an interior for a new home in Bellevue Hill and sketching the design for an exciting new home in Vaucluse.

What is your favourite room or nook in the house and why?

My favourite spot is the hammock in the garden, it's underneath a massive avocado tree which is full of avos at the moment.
