Glas Italia shapes a heritage transformation by Coy Yiontis
From the Hotel des Horlogers in Le Brassus, Switzerland, to Bang and Olufsen in London, UK, the designs of Italian glass brand Glas Italia helps shape the vision of architects all over the world. In Melbourne, Australia, the remarkable transformation of a Victorian heritage home in Middle Park by Coy Yiontis, involved peeling back a ‘noisy’ 1980s postmodern renovation and the complete reworking of the interior so it flows seamlessly. A quieter contemporary addition now brings light deep inside, focused around Glas Italia’s Sherazade Wall system that amplifies the light, natural materials and details to temper the experience.
For Rosa Coy, the crafted response to the interior is embedded in the ethos of the practice founded with partner George Yiontis in the late 1990s. The studio’s experience and deep understanding of space, details, light and materials, has created a body of work where environments are functionally and visually seamless, and the approach to heritage balances provenance with a new layer of permanence. In all of Coy Yionti’s projects, interiors are seamlessly connected with the outdoors.
‘Here, Sherazade is a feature of the interior: the different textures we specified in the glass, the translucency, the glimpses of what’s beyond, all contribute to the calm feel of the space.’
Rosa Coy, Coy Yiontis
The brief for Middle Park involved a balance between the contemporary needs for the family and the heritage roots of the Victorian home. The redesign of kitchen and living areas for more efficient entertaining and the addition of a concealed butler’s pantry and laundry, new ensuites and a home office adjacent to the primary suite has created spaces tailored to family life. Arriving at the front door you wouldn’t know that anything has changed, but once inside there is a fresh sense of invitation. Key to the project was the relocation of the existing stair that blocked views and access to the living spaces and garden courtyard beyond. A sculpted steel stairwell now elegantly hovers between the levels, anchoring the spaces, drawing light through the interior and juxtaposing with the Sherazade Wall system and its patchwork of translucent glass.
‘The layering of natural materials and textures is a key aspect of our design approach. Stone, timber and glass, all working together,’ Rosa Coy explains. ‘Here, Sherazade is a feature of the interior: the different textures we specified in the glass, the translucency, the glimpses of what’s beyond, all contribute to the calm feel of the space. If the door is closed it becomes a focus your eyes are drawn to, if it’s open the view runs right through the house to the garden. So there’s a real sense of space.’
Both research and design know-how underpin Sherazade and its floor-to-ceiling partition system of clear and textured glass designed by Piero Lissoni. First established in Brianza, Italy, in the early 1970s, Glas Italia’s century-long experience with glass is guided by the design house’s passion for innovating. In the collaboration with Coy Yiontis, the design was tailored in response to the architect’s specific requirements. Extensive glass options for each section of the custom-made panel system enabling a truly bespoke feel for the interior.
‘The Sherazade glass doors tie in with the existing steel windows and the new steelwork staircase, creating focus and timelessness for this significant renovation…’
Rosa Coy, Coy Yiontis
The installation was hands-on, from specification to completion, every step of the way guided and supported by Space’s specialist team of consultants. Establishing the required production parameters, checking site access, issuing shop drawings to the builder, and coordinating the manufacturing process, was followed by installation and client hand-over. Here, the balance between Coy’s clear creative vision and the versatility, quality and provenance of Glas Italia, was met with impeccable service at every stage.
‘The Sherazade glass doors tie in with the existing steel windows and the new steelwork staircase, creating focus and timelessness for this significant renovation,’ Coy adds. ‘This is a core theme in our work. We want our buildings to stand the test of time and be relevant in 20 years and more. We use robust natural materials and add colour through furniture and decoration. Craftsmanship is really part of that timelessness. It carries through all the carefully considered materials and details in every project.’
