Gebruder Thonet

Gebrüder Thonet is the company founded by Michael Thonet and his sons in the second half of the nineteenth century. Michael Thonet, born in Boppard in 1796, trained as a cabinetmaker, began experimenting with bent wood in 1830 and settled in Vienna in 1849. Pioneering the steam-bending of solid wood, the company created an essential, functional and elegant language that helped define European modernism.

Its historic designs live on at Gebrüder Thonet Vienna in the Wiener Stuhl chair and the Kleiderständer P29 coat stand, designed in 1929.
