Strips System Sofa

Designed by Cini Boeri

‘Cini Boeri was an architect I admire so much. She really understood the combination of aesthetics and comfort. At some point I think Elsa Peretti would have sat on one of the Strips sofa wearing her Bone Cuffs…’ – Kirsten Stanisich, Richards Stanisich

Affectionately known as the ‘lady of Italian design,’ Cini Boeri was one of the first women to graduate in architecture from the Polytechnic University of Milan and would remain at the forefront of the Italian design scene during her long career. Boeri’s dedication to design produced not only award-winning furniture and architecture, but a pathway for other women to follow. Working for Gio Ponti and then Marco Zanuso, Milan at the time was bustling with new ideas fueled by innovative furniture manufacturers. Joining a cohort of talented creatives working across the disciplines from architecture and furniture design, to objects, interiors and exhibition design, Boeri’s notable projects include the flexible 1968 Strips sofa, and then bed, that would simultaneously launch the Arflex brand and receive the coveted Compasso d'Oro prize in 1979. Cini Boeri was the first woman to be awarded the accolade and more than fifty years later, Strips remains one of Arflex’s most popular pieces.

Arflex

Arflex

In 1947, a group of technicians based in Pirelli in Italy began experimenting with new materials and technologies in the creation of cutting-edge, modern furniture. This was the beginning of the Arflex brand, established on the meeting of technology and aesthetic sensibilities, and driven by a high level of research and experimentation. Officially presented to the public in 1951, Arflex quickly gained recognition for their manufacturing philosophy.
