Fish Design

Rock Vase Black & White

Designed by Gaetano Pesce

Vase in soft resin designed by Gaetano Pesce in 1995 for Fish Design collection.

The collaboration between Gaetano Pesce’s studio in Brooklyn, New York, and artisan Andrea Corsi’s Via Malpighi lab in Milan, would launch Fish Design to the world in 2003. An important chapter in the catalogue of the late and great Gaetano Pesce: designer, architect, artist and master provocateur, who once described the pieces of pure, artistic abandon, as adding warmth, good humour and affection to the spaces that host our lives.
It was 2003 when Gaetano Pesce and Andrea Corsi began working together. The collaboration between Pesce’s studio in Brooklyn, New York, and Corsi’s Via Malpighi lab in Milan, would launch Fish Design to the world.
With a linguistic nod to Pesce’s Italian namesake, Fish Design first appeared back in 1995 its material experiments in resin emerging from the designer's Brooklyn practice. Like all of Pesce’s work, collections celebrate the flaws of life by embracing beauty, joy, texture, sensuality, colour and innovation with pure, artistic abandon. 'Fish Design is not satisfied with uniformity, with the superficiality of traditional design objects, their fatigue, abstraction and globalism…’ Pesce remarked during its launch at the Salone del Mobile in 2003. ‘Fish Design’s goal is to offer more warmth, good humour and more affection for the spaces that host our lives.’
From the Spaghetti and Amazonia Vase to the Babel Bucket, the handmade, highly collectable range now lives on in the hands of artisan Andrea Corsi. It is an important chapter in the catalogue of the late and great Gaetano Pesce: designer, architect, artist and master provocateur, who once described his work as ‘the liquidity of our time,’ its evocative shapes, colours and materials a visceral mash-up of art, design and industry.

Gaetano Pesce

Gaetano Pesce is an Italian architect and a design pioneer of the 20th century. He studied architecture in Venice and attended the Venice Institute of Industrial design. At this experimental school, he met Milena Vettore with whom he opened a studio in Padua, founding in 1959 the "N" Group which focused on studies in programmed art. Since 1962 he has worked in design, experimenting with new materials and unusual shapes. In 1971 he collaborated with BracciodiFerro (then part of the Cassina group) for the production of certain experimental objects and in 1972 he took part in the famous exhibition 'Italy: The New Domestic Landscape' at MoMA in New York. Examples of his work, such as the UP_5 are found in the most important design museums all over the world.
