Wooden Dolls
The Wooden Dolls, which Alexander Girard created for his own home in Santa Fe and made himself, are likewise inspired by his own extensive collection of works of popular art. Half decorative element, half toy, the Wooden Dolls were originally intended only for personal use. Based on originals found in the Girard Estate held by the Vitra Design Museum, the partly joyful, partly grim-looking company of dolls is now coming out as a charming enhancement to any interior. Collection Vitra Design Museum.

Vitra
Based in Switzerland, the Vitra company produces furniture for the home, the office and for public spaces - Vitra for the home is part of the Space collection. Collections by American modernists Ray and Charles Eames and George Nelson form the foundations for the group that works with leading international designers 'Antonio Citterio, Jasper Morrison, Hella Jongerius, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec' to produce a collection that aims for both high functional and aesthetic longevity. Through its Vitra Campus architecture, the Vitra Design Museum, workshops, publications, collections and design archives, Vitra could also be described as a philanthropic design supporter.
Alexander Girard
Born in 1907 in New York City, Alexander Girard was one of the leading figures of postwar American design, along with his close friends and colleagues George Nelson and Charles & Ray Eames.
The primary focus of his wide-ranging oeuvre was textile design. Girard created numerous fabrics for the Herman Miller Company, favouring abstract forms and geometric patterns in a wide variety of colour compositions. Many of his upholstery fabrics remain as timely and vital as ever and are still manufactured and utilised by Vitra today.
